Alright people I get daily emails from the guy in my title with catchy headlines like if i had 3k id invest it in X to earn a long term income/retire early kinda emails they go down to break in to company and why they would invest etc the question is can holding these as single stocks that are not part of my more balanced portfolio ie my vanguard 80/20 fund be a good idea long term
I know there is more risk to buying say £1000 of wimpy taylor as opposed to buying a blended portfolio but we all want to find a unicorn right?

Motley Fool make their money via subscriptions. The bombardment of tips and advice is to keep you reading their stuff and, hopefully, deciding to pay for it. Their articles should not be seen as "in the know" - some of their calls will be good, others will be bad.
In terms of whether single stock investing is a good idea. Its neither - it introduces more volatility which can be good or bad, depending on your ability as a stock picker and the wider sentiment of the markets on any given day. If you're happy with 30% swings in a few days either way and want to take on that risk then crack on. If that sounds daunting, stick to index funds.0 -
Personally I just delete spam messages.

Don't waste your precious and limited time on earth paying any attention to Motley Fool tips.6

Have you noticed how every single article is recommending something different? Eventually they will have recommended everything, the only logical conclusion you can draw is "we have no idea what we're talking about" and by recommending everything they're advocating indexing.5

My nan likes to add "those who can't teach become headteachers, and if you're completely useless they'll make you an Ofsted inspector".snooloui said:Those who can, do; those who can’t, teach.

I remember when Motley Fool UK first launched and it was very pro-indexing. And so it carried on for a few years, but presumably couldn't adequately monetise its content, so it made the switch to writing exclusively about stockpicking with a view to dropping a link to its share tipping service at the end of every article.Another_Saver said:Have you noticed how every single article is recommending something different? The articles are just noise. They're not recommendations at all, and contain insight you could obtain yourself. Their stock picks do perform well, on average, but you need to have the funds to buy each one.
Think of the subscription as their 'management fee'. Are you happy with 'that' management fee, to place the trades to buy their 2 recommended monthly stocks yourself?
Over time, volatility will fade as you build up a portfolio of stocks, but you're talking about potentially 24 a year. Thats a lot!0 -
Surely they are the professionals? They should be at least as good as the experts on this forumAnother_Saver said:Have you noticed how every single article is recommending something different?
