Living with friends and previous landlord references

Hi all,
I'm seeking a piece of advice as I need to move out pretty soon.
For the past two and a half years I've lived with my friends and never been on a contract. Now that they have a baby it's time to move out. My problem is that they're staying in our current home, and I don't want them to get in trouble.
My question is if I tell the estate agency that I won't give any previous landlord references as I've been living with my friends, can the agency check and contact our current agency anyway?
What's the best way now?
Thank you,
Kacper

Why can't you give your current friends as a reference ?
The Lettings Agents won't know who owns the property or which lettings agents are managing it.
Just state you have been staying with friends at XXX address1 -
why would your friend get into trouble?1

You do have a contract, a verbal contract, entirely legal (but hard to prove terms...)

Just say you were a lodger and can provide a reference from home owners/your ex-landlord.2024 wins: *must start comping again!*3
