Just moved - How to compare prices?

Options
Probably a stupid question, however didn't have much joy on google.
Moved house 10 days ago and currently with the previous provider Eon for gas & electricity.
What's the best way to search on the comparison sites for a good deal as don't have any data to go on? Currently on the Eon basic tarriff and going to be paying £107pm dual fuel with a combi boiler. Unfortunately the house has smart meters.

    Why is that "unfortunate"?

Anyway if you had a previous house/flat/tent you can always use the figures you had for those in the short term.  If not, use the national averages - 12k units for gas and 2.9k units of electricity.  Once you've lived there a year you will know what your usage is.  Always better to overestimate than under.

I trust you've registered with E.On and sent a meter reading?  Don't assume that the smart meter will be smart, at least until you've checked the bills.
Start comparing using Citizens Advice and 'Switch with Which?'.  Ignore all projections and claims about savings, forget about DD amounts and just compare total annual costs.  Separate suppliers are probably cheaper than dual fuel.  Also have a look at customer service ratings on CA and the relevant threads in this forum.
  • Contacted Eon on the day we moved in and they have set an account up. They never asked for readings, but have taken photos. Gas is showing on the smart meter, not electric until the 1st bill though.
  • Why is that "unfortunate"?
Because despite having a smart house with heating, lights, sensors etc, I don't want my gas and electric to be smart.

    How utterly ridiculous.

    Each to their own :)

Hi powerful_Rogue, good to have you with us!

If the property has Smart Meters it's very likely they've sent us the meter readings from the date you moved in. If you manage your account online you should be able to locate the 'Meter reading history' and double check this.

As we will have no usage history for yourself we'll go by usage on the meter itself i.e. the previous occupants. I know there are all sorts of variables when it comes to energy usage but for now it's our best guess. We can get a provisional amount set up for now and adjust after your first bill. You would need to contact us if you wanted to do this, otherwise we'll review it after your second bill (6 months in).

We always recommend ensuring you're on the best deal for you. You'll be able to check our tariffs on our website or as you mention you can check around on comparison sites. I would recommend using our 'estimated annual consumption' to check. Whilst the final yearly figures may not necessarily be exact it will at least provide a baseline for comparison. You can find this annual usage information in the tariff section of your online account.

    Thanks, Matt

Better check offers for each fuel instead of switching both to the same supplier. If you are renting look for deals without exit fee.
