Shipper less can I claim back ?

Options
Hi everyone,
im knew to this so I hope I’ve done this right.for years I have been paying way over the odds for my electricity I have rang them on so many occasions to be told I’m on the cheapest tariff blah blah.
recently it’s began to increase massively last week I put over £100 on it last night I put £20 on and it was gone by this morning.I have now been told it’s because I’m shipper  less and I don’t actually have an account with N power they just provide it.They told me they hold no details for me from my meter yet they new I was using my emergency credit, I  then asked if there was any way I could claim any of the money back I have paid for the over priced electricity and was told I carnt as the money I pay don’t actually go to anyone.
is this right or is there something I can do I’m so confused and broke at the same time
thanks in advance

Not entirely sure what you mean, "shipperless"?  Presume you mean you don't think you're with a supplier?
Have to be with somebody, that £20 has to be allocated somehow and somewhere, and if it doesn't go towards your electricity then on pre-pay it's probably paying debt off which is being collected through your meter.

That being said if you live in an all electric property its the most expensive way to run it unfortunately.
  • That’s what they have told me I’m not under any supplier yet for 15 years I’ve been receiving  letters from N power I’ve received   money from N power when my meter hasn’t accepted the pre payment key etc.I said exactly this to them the money has to be somewhere and just seemed like I was going round in circles they told me they can’t  refund me as the payments don’t go to them.my property is gas and electric it has never ever been this bad i am now waiting for northern grid to send me a new mpan number so I can get a supplier
I get why you don’t quite understand I’m absolutely baffled that this has been this way for 15 years and I’ve only just got to the bottom of it yet still don’t understand it

Have you always had these meters?  Do you recall speaking to NPower when you moved in in 2004/5/6 and saying something like "hello, I just moved in to 221b Baker Street, I believe I'm with you for energy, can I set an account up please?"  Or did you just use a key that happened to be already there?

Was this a new build you moved into?  Do you rent or own the property?
  • I can't quite remember the call but it’s got to have happened for me to know which supplier to contact when I was having problems. The meter when I first moved in was a token meter in around 2006/2007 they changed it to a key meter so they surely have t be responsible for the meter yet they told me if anything went wrong with it they won’t be able to sort it as they don’t own it.the house used to be two flats as did the other houses in the culdisac but I’m the only one with this problem.I rent the property from housing association.they have taken reading from me on numerous occasions.they have told me before I’m getting charged more cos they can see I’m using my emergency I only use the emergency if I wake up on a morning and it’s gone off but how would they know that if they don’t hold any of the details on there side.she told me she carnt see from her side how much I’m putting on the meter so it’s only my word there’s no proof.I’m sorry if I’m confusing you but I’m struggling myself to get my head round it all

  • A shipperless supply refers to gas and not electricity. It sounds like your home doesn't have a supply (MPAN) number registered against it.
  • Yes this is what they told me but it’s my electricity that’s the problem gas is fine,I have spent an absolute fortune and I’m just curious to find out whether I can claim it back from somewere as the lady from N power says not which seems really unfair when I’ve been questioning this for so long and they have only just decided to tell me now

Let me clarify 'shipperless' is a term used for gas when gas not has not been used in a property over a period of time so the supplier/shipper cancels their registration making the site (MPRN) shipperless.
This concept does not exist in electricity so there is always a supplier registered against the site (MPAN).
If you google who is my supplier you should be able to find out which supplier is registered to your site, it will also tell you your MPAN. Once you know it is, phone them. If you find it is NPower tell them they are wrong and to check ECOES (central register they have access to).

  • They said they sent me an email in 2019 but I never recieved it

Did you open an account and obtain your own key or card when you occupied the property, or did you just use those left by the previous occupier?

Looks like a hasty, we are closing down soon and it's xmas so get someone else to deal with it.

Really need to get someone to look on ecoes. I would but noone like PM'ing their meter or address detals. But the offer is there if you want it (it may show nothing my permissions are low, I have access as I work for a supplier but in the business area, not domestic).

At I guess I think at some point your MPAN will have been logically disconnected in error. They are not meat to do it until the meter and cutout have been confirmed removed from site. However mistakes occur. Two digits may have been incorrect from the one they intended to do (has to be 2 digits as the last is a check digit). This souds plausable as the remedy to it would be the create a new mpan and get it set up. This is liek a new connection, as as npower are closing down they are not allowed to do it. May be easiest to ask eon (next) as npower resonsibilities move to them (And it sounds like npower disconnectedf it in error here) and convincing a unrelated supplier may be hard! (or cost).

As for the money it is going to the payment processor. I however do not know what happens to payments that have nowhere to move on though! I doubt they will talk to you though, probably just talk to suppliers. You  will not be getting the money back though! And it is in your interest to get it fixed so you can move onto a proper tarrif and not whatever ancient one the system thinks you are on. And as they said, should it ever go wrong no one can help you.

Looking at your post I missed in that it is flats. I would think the logical disconnection occured when it was made into flats. 2 new would have been created and the old logically disconnected (well if done properly). An ecoes search on the address without numbers should reveal if any mpans exists that should be for it. The old mpan for the whole house might still exist and logically be for your flat it the other one for the flat is right, and a logically disconnected one for your falt exists. Of course this is advanced investigation that anyone you might get on the phone is unlikely to be able to do!
