Teamviewer auto annual renewal scam

Hi
I bought a year of Teamviewer (remote assistance software) paying €450+
There has obviously been some small letter in the contract saying that I have to cancel 28 days before it expire. If i dont do this they will send a new invoice for next year that I have to pay.
I did not get any mail from them about an upcoming renewal (they say they have sent it but I have not got any)
The day that the old license expired and the renewal started they sent an invoice.
I contacted them this same day saying that I would not like to renew
This is their answer:

If you had not written to us in the notice period required, then i am sorry to inform you that it is not possible to cancel the 2020 invoice as mentioned in prior communication. Whilst this might not be the preferred outcome of this conversation, the terms are the same for all our customers and this must be respected on both the customer and company's side. In the case that you have sent a written notice 28 days prior to the contract renewal, kindly forward this to us for further discussion.

So now i am thinking that if they have a contract like this its very unfair and i am nervous not paying as they do send late payment and send it to enforcement agency based on previous reviews i have read on trustpilot where they have 1.5stars!!! out of 5
Do i have any protection here or i have to bend down as I am afraid of this affecting my credit score in the end

Thanks for your time

  • Was this for a business?
  • As Teamviewer for private use is free of charge, am I correct in assuming that you signed up to one of their business packages?
If so, you don't have any consumer rights at all and you are dependent on the terms and conditions of the contract that you agreed to.

There are certain regulated industries like insurance where the regulator stipulates advance notice is required etc but outside that it all becomes a very grey area.  As a service, if they were UK based, your cooling off period ends as soon as the service begins and as you are post renewal and presumably had access to the service then no post purchase cancellation rights.

Given you state a price in € then this is presumably not a UK company and so it could be worth checking what statutory right a business has to cancel a contract for services in the country that oversees the contract. It is unlikely to be more generous than the UK but it is possible.

If not then chalk it up to experience and remember to diarise any future “annual” purchases etc so you can cancel before renewal
