Need help!

Options
I was with I supply for 6 months paying a direct debit of £39 per month. When they went bust EDF took the debt I owed isupply (I didn’t even know I had a debt) now they are harassing me for £700. This also happened to me a year ago with EDF saying that I owed then £800 which I ended up agreeing with and am paying back at the moment. I have switched to octopus now as EDF were get to much but now I’m stuck with these debts. Someone please help! EDF can’t prove that I used £700 in electricity in 6 months so should I have to pay it?! I’m also a single mum in a tiny two bed flat? Please help!

Not enough information - How is this flat heated ?
Sorry to say that if it is 'All Electric', then these figures seem likely

Agree more detail - what is the heating, what is your ACTUAL annual consumption.(in kWh not £) Tariff - E7 ?
Have you been providing monthly meter reads to EDF and now Octopus ?
£80/90 for an electrically heated flat is quite possible.

Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

... and how much are you paying Octopus a month?
Would be good not to repeat the errors of the past so I hope you switched using your actual consumption figures and didn't just pick the 'low user' option...
  • Sounds like you haven’t paid enough with the DD payments and has probably happened twice before if you had to agree a point.
consider a prepayment meter if you have any concerns about running up any future debt

Even in a small flat It's unlikely that DD payments of £468 p.a. will be sufficient to pay all the energy bills.  It's very important to send monthly meter readings and to check that you're paying your way and not going into debt.
When comparing, always enter your consumption in kWh derived from actual meter readings, never use 'how many bedrooms, how many people?' guesstimates, and never compare DD amounts, always compare the annual cost.
Prepayment is not a good idea. It costs significantly more and it may be difficult to top up at holiday times. Far better to take control by keeping a close watch on your usage and credit balance.

I find it curious that you have been able to switch away from EDF with a debit balance. As others have said, you need to get on top of this. Start taking and supplying meter readings monthly. You surely will have been asked to supply readings to Octopus when they took over your supply. These will be the end readings if your supply with EDF,bsi you then have a way to check your bill with them.
