How do you make money as a student?

And its all my own fault! I've spent a long time just working in rubbishy jobs and I finally decided to go back to college...I'm taking animal care and I absolutely adore it. The problem is, since I've been back I find holding down a job impossible. I think I resent giving up my weekends when I'm busy all week...I've long worked full time in jobs I hated just for the money but I find it much harder when I'm doing something satisfying all week and then having to give up my limited spare time. I'm not paying rent at the moment but I was really hoping to be able to move out next year...perhaps during the summer. In order to do that I want to get rid of as much debt as possible (I dont have a huge deal but its more than enough for me to cope with), but I just dont seem to be able to knuckle down to working a nine-to-five saturday and sunday job in a call centre or a shop.
I was considering perhaps starting up a little pet-sitting or dog walking service but after reading up on it I'm a bit concerned about insurance and such like. Are there any students here that make a livable amount of money (I do get a bursary and next year will be on a student loan) out of doing anything rather than the usual call centre/shop work?

Ok well I don't know a lot. What you think about is (which is a shame at the moment) temp jobs. Over christmas a lot of jobs go out in shops etc. which yes, is a 9-5 job, but its only for xmas, this will give some extra cash about.
A lot of people also do this in summer (John Lewis for instance) as a lot of employees obviously go on holiday.
The above ideas I feel are awesome as you will also not be in college for a lot of the time over these periods.
Dog walking and baby sitting I would think are quite hard to do when older, obviously because of legality of things.
Also check with your college, see if they have casual jobs going, sometimes they may require people to help out with data entry every now and again. Yes, boring, but it gets you money.

Personally over summer I am hoping to get a games testing job (I am studying Computer Games Programming), so this will obviously help with experience in the industry I am going into, and has a bit of cash coming in. I am not sure about animal care, but maybe some temp job at a local vet may help?
During term time I am a student ambassador which is very much casual, we get a calendar of events and we choose if we can do this, but obviously there can be weeks without anything, and sometimes weeks with everything. See if your college does something like this.
Sorry the lengthhope you like reading,

temping is a good idea actually, I tend to focus better when I'm in a variety of environments anyway. I'm currently looking for part time jobs in an animal-y sphere, but unfortunately my home city is a bit pants for that sort of work. Will definitely try the temp agencies though thanks!0

I started uni in September doing a course which gets a bursary, and I too am living at home rent free. I don't have a proper job but I work as a volunteer for a Cancer Research UK shop. After working for two years I am also down to do casual work which means if my shop or a nearby branch needs someone to run it due to staff absense, they call me up and I get paid to do it. Maybe it would be worth you looking into that sort of thing at an animal charity perhaps?
As the above isn't regular work, I also sell stuff on eBay. I have a habit of going round charity shops getting bargains and then reselling it on eBay and I find this works quite wellI also use a kids site called SwapitShop in conjunction with this - I sell small crappy things I have knocking about at home in exchange for Swapits (their virtual currency), and then resell what I buy with the points on eBay. They mostly sell things such as games, consoles etc which sell like hot cakes

Matched betting.
It does nothing for the CV but pays much better than rubbish temp-style jobs (which also do nothing for the CV). Have a look at the gambling introductory offer loopholes board before you write it off, it paid for my entire time at Uni. It's risk free.
You do need a couple of hundred £ to be able to do it, though.0 -
What temp agencies are there?
Matched betting sounds good0 -

I work as a nursing auxiliary through the local hospital bank, I'm sticking with the bank because it's going to look better on my cv when it comes to applying for jobs when I qualify but you can earn more by working through agencies.Norn Iron Club member 273:beer:0
