Sony 4K issues.

Big issue with my Sony 4K Smart TV today. 
Sound went off and screen is showing "safe mode" message, although picture is still viewable.
Got through to Sony and they sent me a link to update software. I wasn't able to do this and they're now sending me a USB stick with the update.
I have a function on the TV which is supposed to check and download latest updates so why this has not happened I'm not sure. 
As it stands at the moment I'm not sure the USB will reach me before Christmas, and I may have to go out and buy a little portable just in case.
Alternatively the TV is still under guarantee from the place I bought it (Richer Sounds), so I may give them a ring tomorrow and see if they can help. They can do no worse than Sony.

If you have a usb stick lying around can’t you manually download the firmware from the Sony support site and upgrade that way? What’s the model number of the tv?
