XIAOMi Mi9t pro, bin it or repair.

My wife is a Jonah when it comes to this phone.

6 months old, she damaged the screen at two months, got it repaired. Noticed the other day she's using her old Samsung, she sheepishly admits she's cracked the new screen bit informs the handset still works, yet still she uses the Samsung. I've now discovered it only worked for a day after she damaged the new screen.

Oh almost forgot, she tells me it has "some water damage".

What to do with the phone, bin it, eBay try and repair, what to do?

Please no comments on wife, I already know what I want to do about her.

Bin it , water damage and a broken screen shows up possibly replacing screen to find out it's dead anyway.

If it's non functional then you have no way of resetting it to sell on risking compromised personal data

  • Ok.

Any internals to be scavenged, memory, storage, battery???
  • Are you able to determine if the phone still switches on?
It looks like a £200+ phone. The screen and digitizer looks to cost around £30.
I would at least strip it down and check the internals for signs of water damage first. I've had a Xiaomi for a good while (18 months) and it has been a very good phone, knocks spots off my company issue Samsung Galaxy S8.

Please link to where I can pickup a screen/ digitiser for £30, I spent sometime sourcing the last one and it cost considerably more than that.

My son has recently bought a screen for Mi 10 ultimate and I believe he was over £100 (screen only).

I realise there are screens on an auction site from China, these appear to be basic screens without fingerprint scanner.

one example from ebay, shipped from China:

I can't see an accurate delivery date because my VPN persuades eBay I'm in far flung places.

  • You know. I might take a punt. The screen is not the same spec but at this point it may be worth having a bash, if not successful I'll bin the lot.

What do you mean by Jonah ?
Ive not heard it before, is it in reference to breaking the phone twice ?

How did she break it, maybe its time to consider a suitable case or a rugged phone eg I think JCB do one.
  • Jonah was the bloke who got swallowed by a whale in the Bible. It happened because he got slung overboard by the sailors who thought he was bringing them bad luck, much like the OP's wife has with her phones.

So the moral is you're going to get eaten by a whale, make sure your phone is working.  Though it's likely to still end up with water damage.
