Adding to Eskbanker's point, if you don't have a lump sum, but are saving surplus income, investing that monthly is typically advantageous compared to saving it up then investing a lump sum. In short: invest what you intend to invest as soon as you can.

Don't be swayed by the herd. Make your own reasoned investment decisions. Far too much gets written on investment forums on the basis of emotion rather than hard facts. Only expose yourself to a level of risk and volatility that you are comfortable with.1
