Carl James Associates LTD are not solicitors.  They even say this in the video on their website.
They say that they investigate your timeshare and then use UK solicitors to resolve.
I suspect that you will never know the names of these 'solicitors'.
There was a story this morning about timeshares, on "Rip Off Britain".
The couple involved, were conned by 'solicitors' that were not registered.
The programme mentioned a website to check the registration for authorised solicitors.
Legit solicitors have to show their registration number on their own website.
    Hope this helps
  • Many thanks for your reply. I did contact the Law Society who gave me the SRA contact details, but, you need the name of the solicitor to check, which is not the easiest thing to get from these companies. It must be possible to relinquish without too much problem as there are numerous timeshares and personal circumstances change so people get rid of them. Does anyone know of any State side contact, or how one would go about finding an American lawyer who specialises in this?
  • I have just seen Rip Off Britain as mentioned by HoofeHearted on the Timeshare section. It appears the couple attempting to get rid of their timeshare hired a solicitor who got them out of the contract by him dealing directly with the Timeshare people on their behalf. Now it appears that I need to find the correct solicitor who deals in this type of work.  Anyone any suggestions please?

The original 'lawyers' took around £7k off the couple and did nothing.  Money was eventually returned to them because they used a credit card to pay part of that cost.  First step should always be to communicate with the timeshare company direct.  Never, ever pay upfront fees.

Did you contact the timeshare company, if so what did they say, if not contact them x
  • I contacted the first Timeshare company in Florida, their reply was that it was not their problem. The seller told us to stop paying if we decided we did not want the TS and as we lived in the UK no-one would want the bother of getting their money. We have always paid each year and up to date.
The second TS in Hill Head Island said they have a resales department if we want to stop the TS. Of course nothing was heard from them when we made contact.
Any advice on the best route to go as I am very weary of scams and solicitors who just want to charge a fee.
    Thanks.

I am sorry you are still having trouble, have you tried to sell privately or rent out your weeks?
We had ours with Westgate Vacation Villas and they bought it back, it cost us the same as one years maintenance so we were happy with the outcome, we enjoyed many fabulous holidays using an exchange company but our circumstances surrounding travel changed.

Timeshare companies generally have little interest in trying to sell units for owners.  They almost certainly have units still owned by them which they haven't managed to shift.  Those will be their priority.  If you are in the UK you may get away with simply stopping payment and hoping it really is too much trouble to come and chase the money.
