  • Fuel economy is worse.  Could also partly be winter setting in which impacts diesel.

It'll be both higher rolling resistance and the temperature dropping.

What all the "We never used to have all these different tyres, harrumph" brigade forget is just how much tyre technology has moved on in recent years. Tyres aren't "just tyres" now. They're either very grip-focussed, or they're very low-rolling-resistance focussed. That's not just tread, it's rubber compound - and that specialisation has meant they simply don't deal as well with low temperatures as "generic" tyres used to.

And, yes, moving from low-rolling-resistance tyres to cold-weather compound/grip ones does mean worse fuel consumption. Or, rather, you lose the benefit of the low rolling resistance compound...

It's a much smaller difference from Chinese ditchfinders, simply because they don't have the benefit in the first place, and because they tend to be made of much older, simpler and more generic tyre compounds...

I'm finding that tyres performance goes off when getting low but still legal now, whereas I didnt feel it did before. I generally run my tyres down to the blocks the replace them but I seem to loose some grip now so may reconsider, not very eco or MSE but safer.

...and that’s exactly how it should be, imho.  :)

  • The OP should keep an eye on their tyres by regularly checking the tyre wear indicators on each tyre.
