  • Thanks guys.

Not patronisign at all foreversomeday! It's by discussing stuff like that, what helps others just reading on here - beginners etc. I used to be quite up with specs and the technology side of things a few year back - now I'm more interested in the use of application rather than the sheer power. We have a machine here at work running Vista and I hear mixed reviews about what to use. It is likely I will stick with XP. That way I know the performance will be good with the ram and chip specs. I can always upgrade it to Vista. I have both the OS's.

I am hopefully going to sit with an IT chap this afternoon to do some shopping! :D If we can get the time. Motion graphics is new to me, I have used Flash on and off in the past but I want some more 'rustic' footage to use. My current machine is a poor slave. lol

    Thanks

  • Hey all,

Just thought I'd update you with my current spec (and ask for any opinions on compatibility for those in the know). I ***think*** most stuff should run fine. Have concerns about the graphics card being DDR3 fitting with the board?

If anyone would like to quickly galnce over - here ya go:

    Board:
    Gigabyte GA-P35-DS4 Socket 775 Motherboard

    Chip:
Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 "Energy Efficient SLACR 95W Edition" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - Retail

    Ram:
    OCZ 4GB (2x2GB) PC2-5400C5 Dual Channel Vista Upgrade Gold Series DDR2 (OCZ2VU6674GK)

    Graphics:
    XFX 8600GT 256MB DDR3 540MHz Core Clock 2xDVI PCI-E Graphics Card

    Hard Drive 1:
    160GB Maxtor Diamondmax 21 SATA 2MB

    Hard Drive 2:
    Western Digital WD5000AAKS 500GB SATA II 7200RPM 16MB Cache - OEM

    Monitor:
Samsung SM-226BW 22" Widescreen LCD Monitor - Glossy Black

    DVD:
    LiteOn DH-20A1S 20X DVD±RW/DLRAM Black Bare Drive - OEM

    Case:
    NZXT Apollo Advance Custom Gamer-Black

    Power Supply
    Gigabyte SUPERB 460w PSU

    Keyboard:
    Logitech Deluxe 250 Keyboard Black

    Mouse (squeek squeek)
Logitech MX400 Performance Laser Mouse Silver

    Card Reader:
52 in 1 Card Reader Black with USB

I think that's it all for now. Through the sites above I managed to get the best prices on Aria, Ebuyer and Overclockers. The total system so far comes to £812 delivered, which I think is ok considering the 22" Samsung monitor! :D I have not included speakers for the moment.

I'd love to get the price under £800 with the similar spec! Only £12 or so - but that's why I'm a money saver!

    :D

Looks fine to me, don't worry about the graphics card having DDr3 memory. It's integral to the graphics card so won't affect anything else.

You could save a bit on your case, you can get midi towers for less than £10 at ebuyer although personally I owuld spend more than that. Something like this would get you below £800 and should be OK

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/126923 it's all tool less fixings and comes with one 12cm fan built in. I use a very similar Gigabyte Triton case and am very happy with it.

EDIT: just checked and according to a review it has two fans installed.
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die

  • Cool - thanks for answering my query!

Also - looks like the best place to save them few extra pounds. I have been thinking about changing the monitor. At present my TV is merely a portable, with a screen smaller than the Samsung 22" so not quite sure what to do. Though I do have a projector. hmmm, i'm not very good at makign decisions (for myself anyway lol) :o

I think that spec is quite decent for the price. It should last a good while, handle graphics well and either XP / Vista with most imaging software.

Does anyone know of any promotional codes for Aria / Ebuyer / Overclockers. I know I can use quidco for aria.

    Cheers
