Utilita chasing Eversmart 'debt'

I've just received a letter from Utilita 'reminding' me that I owe an outstanding balance. I've never been a Utilita customer, but I was with Eversmart ages ago. But 1) I switched away from Eversmart in early 2019 - a long time before they went under, 2) I don't believe I owed Eversmart anything at that point.

I've just checked back through the invoices from Eversmart, and it looks like there was some sort of !!!!!! up by them - I switched to my new supplier in Feb 19 (when they started charging me from), but I've also got a bill/statement from Eversmart where they also charged me for 4 more weeks after switching! Even after that it says I was in credit by over £100. I also have another statement (provided in March, but back dated to my real switch date in Feb, so presumably them correcting their !!!!!! up). That one says that I was £150 in credit at that point! I've not dug out my bank statements to check that I was refunded the overpayment, but I expect it was settled as I don't usually miss things like this.

Anyway, I've no idea why Utilita think I owe them anything?? It's not a huge amount, and I don't want my credit file tarnished over it, but loathe to just hand over money when I don't appear to owe them anything! I expect Utilita (well, their recovery department) are going to be most unhelpful, like they generally are.

  • What was the actual date of the change of supply?
this maybe different from your payment date.
Be happy, it's the greatest wealth :)
  • As I said, Eversmart must've cocked up because there's an overlap of supply on one of my 'final' bills from them. I'm going by the dates of supply on all the bills - not the bill date itself. I switched in late Feb 19, my current supplier started charging me from late February (bill generated late March). Meanwhile Eversmart continued to charge me for standing charge, and usage on dual fuel until mid March, well after the switch over date. I seem to recall they continued to take another monthly DD payment as well (I'd left the DD active at their instruction, in order to settle any final payment, or refund in my case).
