                    Hey,
Im employed and pay tax through the paye system, do I need to tell HMRC about change of address even if I still have access to my previous address (family) and it's more secure?

It would make sense for your employer and HMRC to have the same postal address. If you ever need to prove your address for anti-money laundering checks, HMRC correspondence or payroll documents from your employer are both normally valid proofs, so it's really up to you which address you show.tony3619 said:Hey,

as said above, best update your address as this will be used in referencing for credit checks and fraud checks. having different addresses will be flagged up on the referencing system.0

The Reason I haven't changed my address is that it has been known for me to be not receive post at my new address whereas I can still receive any correspondence from my old address.
When you say credit checks do you mean if I was to take a credit card loan etc it would be used to cross reference? And fraud checks?
Can I phone them up and change it or is that old fashioned? Lol

The idea of getting through on the phone to HMRC is the really old fashioned bit!tony3619 said:

when you tell your employer of your new address, they will update HMRC. i don't recollect telling HMRC of my new address when I was moving whilst being employed.tony3619 said:

What happens if your employer still has the old address?0

... you tell them your new one? Youre really making this far more complicated than it needs to be.tony3619 said:What happens if your employer still has the old address?0 -
I understand it's easy to change the details so it's not about it being overly complicated, I'm trying to establish if it's a legal requirement to update an address if I'm on paye or if it's a recommendation as this would possibly make it harder for me to guarantee I get all correspondence from HMRC and if there are any repercussions for not updating with my employer past not receiving any letters sent by them.

Let your employer know that it is a "correspondence address".
However you should ensure that you are on the electoral roll for where you actually live and with the DVLA if you have a driving licence.0 -

In fact, many employers do not update HMRC with any new address you give them. It is your responsibility to tell HMRC when you move, and the PAYE system will not necessarily register a change of address you have given to your employer.AskAsk said:
