Same bike rack different car

I have a bike rack that sat over the glass on the hatchback boot of a Citroen zx. It is held on by 6 fasteners, 2 on top of the boot,2 on bottom and one each side. I have to fit on a Toyota Corolla and the glass on the hatchback boot extends fully to the side. I cannot hook on these side catches for fear of shattering the glass. Do I have to buy bike racks for the roof or is there a safe way round this?

thanks for any suggestions

Depending on the make of rack, you can get replacements for the hooks, that are designed to be used on glass tailgates. Instead of a metal hook on the end of a strap, they are large soft rubber dumbells on the end of a strap, that look like this http://www.cycleworld.co.uk/acatalog/F1WX.jpg. The dumbell then sits inside the glass (with the force taken over a larger area, than with a metal clip), with the strap passing through the gap.

    Have a look in Halfords.

there are different kinds of cycle carriers that you can buy.

the one where you put it on a hatch back:which sounds like the one you hav, one that goes 3/4 of the way up your rear windscreen and one that goes on top of your vehicle.

so, i suspect, that if you want to put your cycles ontop of the vehicle, you'll have to buy another cycle carrier.

as altarf said, i would also recommend, check out your local halfords.
