Just got this warning; is part of an email from Google changing their policies again.
Quote:
"If you exceed your storage limit for 2 years, we may delete your content across Gmail, Drive and Photos."
It also says it won't come into force for a couple of years.
However as I have a free gmail account and just read my emails and leave them to worry about the tech issues and was thinking that they would prevent me exceeding any limits; if that was a problem to them; I am now a little concerned. For all I know I may have already exceeded my limit for 2 years.
Do you think that one day someone will send me an email or I will take a photo (it auto syncs to google photos) so exceeding my limit (the straw that breaks the camel's back so to speak) and I will suddenly loose all my emails, photos and data files etc?

If you have an Android phone you have more than Gmail.  You'll have Google data, so pictures are the main reason for running out of space on your online account.
There are two options in the Google Photos sync options, one to use the 15Gb you get and you've always had, and the other option which is lower quality but doesn't count towards your usage.

Anyway you should always keep local copies of your photos and not depend on your phone and/or your cloud account to look after them.
  • "which is lower quality but doesn't count towards your usage."  But will do from June 2021

    NO - Because Google say
    "
Do I need to do anything right away?
No, you can continue to use Google Photos to back up your photos and videos. After June 1, 2021 we will reach out and send you reminders when you are nearing your storage limit. Most users will have years before they need to take action.

    Amazing stat from Google Photos
"and a remarkable 28 billion new photos and videos are uploaded every week."

You can see why they are seeking to put a lid on it

On my google account, if I click on the initial at the top right and go to manage my account it shows how much of the 15GB storage I have used.
But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,
Had the whole of their cash in his care.

If you're that worried and they are that important, backup them up elsewhere.

    Precisely.
This sort of thing is why I will never trust any of my digital ‘stuff’ to a 3rd party.  You are always at their mercy and have no ultimate control over your ‘stuff’.  Storage devices are cheap as chips these days.
  • If any of the photos or mails that you have that are important to you then you MUST back them up to somewhere under your control.  Google will have NO LIABILITY for any lost data, photos, mails which they may store for you.   Take full responsibility for your own backups, and regard Google as a convenient, but disposable, extra repository.
