Electronic Handbrake

Many newer cars have electric handbrakes.  Not sure about the technology.
Had anybody experienced costly repair ?  What is it like to use ?

My last 4 or 5 cars have had these. No repairs necessary yet.
Very simple to use, except one (can't remember which) which had the switch in a silly position.
My current one doesn't even have a switch - it applies with firm pressure on the brake pedal when stationary.

Wonderful bit of kit, means you literally do nothing with hill starts etc, just press and go :)

Only issue I've ever had was trying to do a reverse hill start from parked on a mega steep hill, which the auto release didn't like. Manual switch release worked fine.
  • Appreciate prompt and helpful replies.  Suspect I've been too suspicious of this.

It's not new technology it's been on cars for quite a while, i know a couple people who have Astra J's which are about 10 years old and they had it as standard and haven't had any issues with them.

Are they any issues if you want to change brake discs/pads?

Never had an issue changing mine.  Just release the handbrake before you work on them.  You may need to go through a procedure to reset the parking brake when you first replace them but its generally simple.

A previous car (a Qashqai) had a system that worked flawlessly, It automatically disengaged and engaged the handbrake without the need to fiddle with a switch.
