They are not something I would recommend ... just because something is a duplicate does not necessarily mean it is not needed or is not relevant(going for the max number of negatives there). Try searching on google, there are several out there, but use with caution and make sure you have a backup first.I don't care about your first world problems; I have enough of my own!1

Thank you both for the reply's.
I will only be checking an external hard drive for duplicate pictures and music, not my laptop.0 -
I use TotalAV (free download) to check for duplicate pictures - its surprising how many copies of copies are made.1

Been looking for something so checked it out.Alfrescodave said:I use TotalAV (free download) to check for duplicate pictures - its surprising how many copies of copies are made.
( I have multiple copies of stuff taken off camera/phones and moved/copied about a few times)
Seems it does a fuzzy match by name size and looks like which might be useful over a checksum comparison

Oldie but goodie Antitwin is good for general files (hashcheck) and has a special "compare pixel" feature that will find resized photos (which hashchecks would miss). You can do lotsof things like choose names and hashchecks (or both) as checking critera, use folders, or weighted rules for auto-ticking the boxes that set which one gets deleted, delete things to a hardlink, or a a "pre delete" folder, etc

For audio, Similarity is very powerful, but you have to read all the helptext to get the best out of it

There is a payware verson, but the freeware one is fine, it just omits a few of the 'labour saving' tools of the payware one.

Do you know why you are getting duplicates?"The Holy Writ of Gloucester Rugby Club demands: first, that the forwards shall win the ball; second, that the forwards shall keep the ball; and third, the backs shall buy the beer." - Doug Ibbotson0

I think its because when i transfer from my phone i have sometimes put them into another folder ???.
I also seem to have them backed up in photos and windows media player as well as folders that i have made.
Hope that makes some sense.
it seems to be the same with lots of my music.0 -
If you know what folders they are in and you haven't changed the filenames, do you know that you can drag them all into one folder and your operating system will check the filesize & dates and overwrite the duplicates (having asked you first). Saves all that slow 'checking hashes/checksums business.
