Looking to get a car soon and was told it would be best to pay for part of it via credit card and then the rest by debit card .

I don't want the hassle of a credit card as it's more to worry about and I'm unemployed.  However they say I have more consumer rights with one?

I'll be buying from an official dealership so it's unlikely they'd mess me around anyway

It gives you section 75 protection, which can be extremely useful, as many are finding out in the current climate.

However, your chances of getting one are very slim if unemployed.

Would I be covered if one of my parents pays with a credit card for the deposit and i pay the rest on my debit card?

No.  If it's your car, then the card needs to be in your name.
  • Buying a car on credit while unemployment is a very bad idea anyway

It would have just been the the deposit of about £100. Not going to bother then, just thought I'd check

your parents could buy the car in their name, including £100 on card, then gift it to you. As long as the receipt and log book in their name, they would be s75 covered.

Doesn't matter if subsequently you give money to your parents to reimburse them

Be a bit of a push to claim the card holder was a direct beneficiary of the sale if OP is the RK, the only one insured to drive on it (even if parents are on as named drivers, would be clear OP is the main driver - or they break the law and front it), doesn't live near parents etc

Sounds like a bit of a hassle . We will discuss it but its unlikely we would go that route, thanks for the info anyway .

I'm sure if I buy direct from Toyota or VW they would help if I had any problems ( depending on what their warranty offers, we will read the terms and conditions carefully)
