Well you're not giving away much here! No info on what make of PC, what OS, what application you're using when it freezes, etc...

But a friend had similar problems on an HP desktop machine, which we fixed by installing the latest hardware drivers for the machine. We couldn't establish for sure why the problem suddenly appeared, but our best guess was that Windows Update installed a patch that interfered with the existing drivers.

So here's something you may want to try: Note the make and model of your PC, then go to the manufacturers website, go to the "support and downloads" section, find, download and install the latest drivers for your model.

If your antivirus has expired you need to do something about it!

If it expired recently and XP is up to date (i.e. Windows Update is enabled) then you're probably ok - either renew your subscription or if you don't want to pay, uninstall the existing antivirus, then go to

    http://free.grisoft.com/

and download & install the free version of their antivirus.

If you've been running for long without AV and/or XP is not patched then you may have malware on your PC - see the stickies at the top of this board for advice on what to do to check this out.

If that all shows up as clean, next step would be to get someone to help update your drivers. They are easy enough to find on Toshiba's UK website (hint: you need to look under "Discontinued prodcuts" for the Tecra 8200, and you will need to know which spec of 8200 you have, as there are about a dozen variants).

  • Sounds like an internet explorer bug. Download Firefox http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/ and use that instead - it works the same.

  • The autofill is part of the google toolbar, if you re-download google toolbar it should work again.

I hope that you fully un-installed your expired anti-virus program before installing AVG?

More sound advice - from personal experience, a half-uninstalled copy of Norton AV can produce some really weird problems. Norton (Symantec now?) give instructions on their website describing how to do it properly, but it's well hidden.

Also, don't forget to turn on Windows Update if it isn't already. If you're not sure of the origins of your XP licence (e.g. a secondhand PC), you can choose a Custom install, so you can simply decline to download the (potentially) irritating Windows Genuine Advantage stuff but still get all the security patches.
