Cheque signature ??????

I have ordered a Santander cheque book this evening, however I have always done everything online(account opening etc etc), so I do not believe they have a signature from me on record.
I have to send a cheque for opening a saving account, how do I ensure it won't get bounce???

It shouldn’t make a difference. I have a completely online account with Metro Bank- I’ve only ever been in a ‘store’ twice, both times to pay in cash. They don’t have my signature either and the cheques I’ve written (all of them to my regular beauty therapist) have all gone through fine.

Even if they had a signature for you on file they certainly would not compare the signature on the cheque against your when processing it.

Actually Metro will have your signature. They ask for passport or driving licence when applying for the account and ascertain, certainly when doing this online, whether the scan includes a signature. Not sure what they do if it doesn't but they are happy when it does.

I suggest they would if the cheque was for more than £1000.
Having no signature to check against is one of the main reasons that cheques are returned unpaid today - far more than for lack of funds.

A signature would only be checked if the cheque book had been reported lost. Then they go for manual checking. Other than that its simply scanned & payed.

All cheques over £1000 are looked at - it will be a scanned copy of course the originals are at the banks where they were paid in or at a central processing site.

I haven’t been involved in that side of banking for about 5 years but at that time we received the original paper cheques for accounts drawn on customers of my branch. Very occasionally a cheque would be lost in the system and a printed version of a scan was supplied instead.

This was for an agency bank but I doubt that Lloyds Bank Ipswich would be sorting them into deciding whether to scan or send the original each time.

All cheques are now scanned by the little machine a teller has - most UK banks are now part of this. So any cheque drawn on any bank will be kept at the place you deposited it, they are no longer sent to a clearing centre due to time constraints and cheques now have to clear by midnight after the working day they were paid in.

That’s interesting to know. I work in a completely different area for a different bank so don’t keep on top of developments. As far as I’m aware my current employer doesn’t issue cheques to customers.
