We found that a mini skip was cheaper than a comparably sized hippo bag.

They have a list of retailers - just check them.I am sure the difference in price will be minimal, and you pay MUCH more for the collection. A skip is cheaper than their 'HIPPOSKIP' collection....

Do bear in mind that buying the bag is just buying the bag. If you want Hippo to take it away, that costs a lot more. You can buy the bag direct from Hippo, with collection included in the price. If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.0 -
If it is building rubble and/or soil to get rid of, it is worth ringing around for "grab hire" - Can sometimes be cheaper than even a skip...

Apologies for resurrecting this thread, but it is a specific Hippo question - their customer services do not seem to respond to emails! I paid for both bag and collection to remove garden waste. We do not have a drive and our street has on-street parking. They collect within 4m of the highway, with clear access from overhead trees and cables, or parked cars. In essence, does that mean I need to treat it like a skip, take up a parking space on the street and then pay the council for the bag to be classed a skip? Given that we are likely to fill it, we would need to be filling the bag in the street - it's not practical to fill in the garden, then lug a 1 tonne bag (potentially!) to the street! Has anyone had experiences of Hippo collecting? Unfortunately, I paid for the bag and collection so I don't want to lose the money paid on the latter, even if it's less convenient that hiring someone to remove it. Thanks!0

If your front garden is within 4m of the road but you're worried about Hippo not being able to collect due to parked cars, could you not put the bag in your garden, fill it up at your leisure, then just make sure there's nothing parked outside when they come to collect, e.g. by parking your car or a friend's car there and moving it at the appropriate moment?0

Give them a call. I did (a few years ago) and they were very helpful. While we were on the phone, they used Google maps street view to check out the overhead cable and front wall situation where I live. Although they couldn't actually guarantee to be able to collect from me due to the cables, they offered to send a driver to have a look when they were next in the area. They also suggested that most people with no driveway use something like wheelie bins to reserve space on the road on collection day. They were happy to lift the bag over my front wall.0

Thanks @casper_gutman and @rach_k - that is really helpful. I think that really does sound like the right idea; to put the bag out shortly before the collection is arranged for. Once it's in the road, we can move the garden waste at speed!0
