Boiler isdue

Hi Guys, When my boiler starts the main fuse keeps blowing, any idea, do I need a plumber or a Sparkie

Comments

  • 1. When you say the main fuse do you mean a whole house circuit breaker or RCD, or an individual fuse in the consumer unit?
    2. The boiler should be connected to the mains via a 3 amp fuse.  Is this fuse intact?
    3. What sort of boiler is it, and is the pump integral to the boiler or located elsewhere?
My first port of call would be a plumber.  Shouldn't be too difficult to determine what the cause is, and the fix is more likely to be for a heating engineer than an electrician.

Thanks it blows the whole house and the pump is in the airing cupboard
  • You have a faulty component in your heating system which is causing a short, call someone who is gas Safe qualified to do some fault finding for you

So, the 3A fuse in the boiler switch remains intact?
AFAIK, all CH devices, except the immersion heater, operate from this fuse.  If so, I guess "the main fuse" that "keeps blowing" is RCD. Correct?

  • As said above, the 'boiler' effectively includes the pump, valves, timer, room stat - and the boiler itself. Any of these could be causing this problem.

And if it's the main RCD switch in your CU, it could - as Grumbler says - be a small leak to earth rather than a 'short circuit'.

Either way, you really need a sparky who's happy to do fault-tracing on boiler and CH control electrics (it's amazing how many run a mile) or possibly a plumber who is competent at the electrical side as well (it's amazing how many run... yougettheidea)

Do you have a plumber you already use for your servicing and repairs? If so, I'd call him and ask his advice as he will almost certainly have a sparky he already uses on his installs for the boiler and control wiring. I'd much rather have a sparky who understands these CH parts.
