How to find out if someone's got married

If you can't ask them out right?
The marriage would have taken place within the last 10yrs & probably would have taken place locally.

Ask them what they're tax codes are.  If they end with an N or M then that person has been married in the current tax year  :)

NB.  If they don't end with N or M it doesn't mean they aren't married.

If you cant actually ask in person, can you text, email, have a friend ask them?
    Ask a neighbour etc?
Try the registrar, my ancestry or my heritage?
Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....
  • Unfortunately there's no way they can be asked by any means & we're not in contact with any of the person's family.

I know it seems very cloak & dagger and I would explain why I need to find out but I don't know if the person is on mse

You would have to look at the most recent marriage indexes, but they aren't online. They are on microfiche at a number of libraries (e.g. the British Library).

  • Hi,
try the Electoral Register, or check their facebook status.
  • It might be difficult at the moment as the registers are on microfilm and each quarter will have to be checked separately. Your local archives/register office will be running a limited service at the moment (if you visit, they won't want to hand out 30  microfilm sets that all have to be quarantined). I would email your nearest archives for advice
  • Thanks all - it looks like the latest records on line go up to 2005 but I've contacted the BL to see if anything be researched online
As for SM, their posts are private but from what I can see I may have a date to work from.

Can you not do a registers search the same way you can to get a copy birth certificate? Can't think what gov site it is.
Just need names and approx date of marriage, possibly their DOB too, the search is done either side of that date for so many years.
Mortgage started 2020, aiming to clear 31/12/2029.
  • The General Register Office will only search for three years and even that might be limited at the moment - they will be minimising what they handle just like everyone else.

I've also contacted the local Registrar's office to see if they can offer some advice. Hopefully something will come up
