If NS&I have not been informed of the death of a bond holder, the bonds are still in the draw. However, any win will not be paid unless it is within the first year following the death. After that the prize goes to the next eligible bond.

I have two bonds dated 1958 which belonged to my husband who passed away over a year ago. They can be encashed but on the understanding that the bonds are destroyed. I think this is a silly rule, as they are nice momentos, and who would know (unless you put them on eBay after having been paid out)

I wonder how many physical bonds are out there now? I only have the first two that I bought. The rest are just on letters stating what the numbers are.

Very strange, I had the paper bond in my name my whole life and it wasn't that long ago that I registered them on the NS&I website. They haven't told me the bonds aren't mine or can't be registered to me. On the website it tells me they were eligible in '57 but my Mum would only have been a baby herself at that time so there's no way they could have been bought in anticipation of my arrival.

I have £14 which were eligible in January 1957, they were bought by my grandmother and given to me when I was born. They've never won though. Actually I've just realised that I always thought they weren't transferable so how would she have gifted them to me?

If they're in your name they must have been bought in your name.
However that 1957 eligibility date on the NS&I website is a default for old bonds. I have 21 bonds bought at various dates between 1956 and 1971 (can't read the final digit on some) all listed as eligible 1957.
