Single garage roof replacement

Hi,
Old possibly (not) asbestos roof... 16x9 ft.
£1450 just for labour, no materials and not disposing of the old roof?
Surely a days work, couple of pairs of hands should come in under £1000 surely?
All in quotes have been £1750 - £2200, ouch.
No access problems etc

Unless the material has been tested, you should assume that it is an asbestos cement roof (subject to age of course). On that basis, removal costs will be higher, although I would have expected any quote to include (safe) disposal of the waste.Depending on the construction of the roof (steel trusses or wooden joists ?), it could quite easily take two or even three days to strip and replace the roof.Get a sample of the roof sheets tested, and if it turns out to be free of asbestos, shop around for a cheaper quote. Her courage will change the world.
Treasure the moments that you have. Savour them for as long as you can for they will never come back again.1 -
What is the construction of the walls - single/double brick, block, timber -
As Freebear test the material - assume it is asbestos, use mask, googles, double wrap the sample. If it is asbestos get quotes for its removal - that will probably cost more than a new roof.
Don't forget VAT to be added to quotes !!!!!!!!!Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill1 -

In the end I couldn’t fathom or get my head around the labour cost firms wanted (asbestos waste processing costs + roof materials at retail + 25% Margin still provided over 750 per person in labour for the day) so I DIYed instead.1 -
Cheers all
Yes I'd expect asbestos disposal to cost...but it's gree for me to take the dump. It's just the labour I don't understand. I even asked the guy to break it down a bit to just help me understand where the money is going... he broadly declined and just reiterated the quote, if it was like 5 guys just for the day then maybe it would make sense.
If I can be clear how to attach roofing sheets to the light steel frame, I'll do it myself and save the ~£1500 for something else...0 -
Had exactly the same when I queried labour costs as well. No explanation as to why it was so high or that it was more than two people for a day.
To secure the roofing sheets you can either use self tappers for metal or pilot drill and then metal screws (pilot gives the option of bolting if you’d prefer that).
also some suppliers offer metal stitching screws that say they make installing easier but they cost a little more (£10 against £3 so no biggie in the scheme of things).1
