Start at the top where there is an open edge and try levering it off to find out how easily it can be removed. If you're not bothered about the tiles I cant see the problem.
Unless you hate the boards or are making a significant change could you buy identical boards and fill the gap at the top?

Ideally I'd like to get the plastic/chipboard sheet off and then retile.
What do you mean by "plastic/chipboard sheet"? Plasterboard/chipboard? If it's plasterboard, you can possibly just break everything together, without wasting effort on removing the panel first.

I've stuck those plastic panels to a plastered wall, and I would say that the adhesive really held them to the wall well. I've never had to remove one, but would have thought they could be really stuck on.

Just got up a step ladder and looked. Confirmed it's like ply or chipboard with a thin plastic front.
I slid a cheap thin paint scraper behind and it went down the back about 4 inches clear with no glue for 10 inches along and then just a dab.
I need to find something that is thin enough to slide further but it makes me optimistic.
There were a lot of grab handles, 2 shower risers and a seat which I removed. They were ordinary screws set in with ordinary plastic rawl plugs.
Looking at the poor way it's put up it's possible it was held up with the screws and a dab of glue............so getting the rawl plugs out may be a first job.
Tried to buy a cutter today but high freezing wind and torrential rain with people queuing outside waiting to go in so will go next week.

It could be MDF. Be interested to know how well it holds to the tiles.

One end has been fitted to 2x2 strips of wood and stands away from the wall, possibily to house the fittings for the seat. But it could just be that they couldn't be bothered to buy/cut a 4th piece of board to make it fit. Hollow the top was just left open and dirty.
I'm wondering if it is held to the wall by the screws used for the chrome bits and pieces. That would be a plus!
