Cost of new (non-standard) front door

Options
Hi good people of MSE! :)

We are based in west-london and have a basement flat that means the steps up to the flats above restrict the space for our front door.

The front door is roughly 70x180 (not-including frame). It's pvc, but is old, drafty and just not ideal for a number of reasons. We had a quote to replace with another PVC door for £2k (!) ... and that was including a hefty discount apparently! They said that was the cheapest they'd do considering the size. I was thinking more like £500 - £800. I have tried a fair amount of googling, but so far can't find anything reasonably priced that would fit, as most have a minimum size bigger than our door.

Does anyone have experience of buying smaller / non-standard front doors and has any suggestions? Any idea where we might get a smaller pvc or composite door without breaking the bank?

Thanks in advance!

I'll just say that I got a quote for a standard off the peg door purchase and fitting to standard space and was quoted £1000 -£1200.
My neighbour had a basic door fitted to her garage £1000.
I wouldn't be surprised if this has to be specially made or sourced then I wouldn't be surprised at £1800 or thereabouts, probably more. The 'substantial discount' I'm not so sure about. That does sound a bit off.
Hopefully someone can find the non standard for you.

Your door is very much shorter than a standard door, so you will be lucky if you can find a door that can be cut down to fit. You are probably going to have to pay for a custom door. You can order from anywhere in the UK to save money. Although you will have to pay the cost of delivery, you will probably save much more than the cost of delivery getting it made somewhere where the costs are lower.

I was in the same situation 15 years ago when I needed a very short door for a property in Stoke-on-Trent. Luckily I found a bench joiner who made me a fantastic hardwood door for £1000. I had quotes at the time for about £1200 for a composite door. Unfortunately I didn't retain his contact details, and as he was about 70 years old at the time, I doubt he is still working.
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.
  • Thanks both,

I might do the same and try to see if there's anyone on mybuilder who can quote for the door + fitting, or see if there's a local company that could fit if I bought a bespoke door online.
