Pre payment Gas Meter (British Gas) alternatives & SSE electricity
Options
Hi,
I have moved into a flat and it has a prepayment meter for the gas. Current supplier is British Gas.
Electricity is with SSE.
Can anyone advise what is likely best move for me. In the short term and medium term. I expect to stay here for a few years ideally.
If it will save me decent amount of money I would like to try to move away from a pre payment meter.
Does anyone know if it would be much of a saving?
Also would be great to know the easiest way to do this if anyone has any experience of switching.
Thanks
Colin

Ask British Gas. They do a credit check and often say you fail it even though you know that's not really possible. So then you change supplier and get them to change the meter. I used Eon for that.1

Cheers folks, paid off my electric balance and trying to get hold of British Gas to speak to someone about moving to a standard meter appears impossible.
Does anyone have a number for British Gas energy? Thanks, Colin.0 -
You can try 0333 202 9802, might be easier to use the chat function on their website though.
You should be cheaper using a standard credit meter than a pre-payment meter, as there are more competitive prices if you pay by direct debit, and the standing charge is always cheaper.
For example, current British Gas 'Pay As You Go' tariffs for gas: 2.888p per kWh, standing charge 35.700p per day (£475 per year), while for the same area paying by direct debit they'll give you 2.565p per kWh, standing charge, 13.862p (£358 per year).1
