It is possible, usually if you pay by card you refund goes on card. But some retailers may not have cash on the premises so they can refund you on to your card.1

Not to the best of my knowledge, no.It may be theoretically possible but I think it would be breaking the T&C of the agreement between the merchant and the card company (e.g. VISA / Mastercard)1

Goods now not coming and person is unable to get to the retailer to collect cash refund.Have never been in this situation that i had to do this. Enquiry is regarding a friend.0

We had it in the motor trade that sometimes people would pay £500 cash which we would bank the next day, then they'd pull out so we would either refund them to a card or via BACs straight into their account. You may find the merchant services company the retailer uses may look for the 'payment' transaction & they may reject the refund.Aidanmc said:Penguin_ said:It is possible, usually if you pay by card you refund goes on card. There's no reason a bank transfer couldn't be used though.2

Exactly. The retailer can just make a payment to a current account, i.e. with a sort code and account number. If they refuse doing that, they probably have run out of funds.NottinghamKnight said:There's no reason a bank transfer couldn't be used though.
Silly thing to do, btw, paying a cash deposit.0 -
Funnily enough I was at the post office posting things and buying stamps yesterday. I paid by credit card, but then looked at the receipt and found I had been overcharged (she had put in the wrong stamp price). She said she could refund the overcharge to my debit card if I had one on me, but not the the CC I had just paid with. No idea why. So yes, it is possible.1
