Cancelling direct debits?

I wanted to cancel my Lloyds DD that pays my Vanquis credit card so called Vanquis and gave the new current account details for future use. I then cancelled the Lloyds direct debit in my internet banking. Two days later a I got a confirmation email from Vanquis your new DD has been set up. The next day I got another email that said your DD has been cancelled.

Only Vanquis cancelled the new DD presumably after Lloyds told them my (previous and unrelated)  DD had been cancelled.

Should I have left the previous DD open? Why would they cancel the new DD upon instruction that an unrelated account DD had been cancelled?

  • It seems you confused things by setting one up and cancelling the first, and somewhere along the line an error has been made.   Does the letter definitely refer to the new DD and not the old one?

It's better to leave all DDs in place until they are definitely not being called upon.

Are you sure that it's the new DD that's been cancelled? Is it possible that you've just been confused by the order in which the letters arrived? It's usual for a "cancelled DD" letter to be sent even when you've cancelled the DD directly with the bank. Often these letters don't specify the account on which the cancelled DD was drawn. Do check the exact wording of the letter and, if necessary with Vanquis. (I'm not familiar with Vanquis's online offering - you might be able to use that to check your DD status.)

  • Definitely the new DD cancelled I downloaded the Vanquis app and there was a message to pay by alternative means and I checked there was no DD in place before setting one up again.
Only emails received no letters so far.
TBH it’s happened before with Vanquis and they haven’t changed since the last time!
Same thing happened with Amazon New Day cc.

Other credit card providers seem to not be phased by me cancelling the old DD but the the two above do, they get a message from the old bank and cancel the new bank DD!

In future I will either cancel the old DD a week before instructing the new or leave the old one in place until the first payment has been made from the new DD, with these two anyway. Think they like you to leave the old one in place in case they still need to take a payment before the new DD is in place, but both of these were zero balance owed.

For a credit card, you call the card company and give them your new DD details. Do nothing else. The new DD will be set up on your new account and the old DD removed from your old account automatically.
