Speedbank issue.

I bank with first direct. Yesterday I attempted to withdraw £500 from a speedbank at Sainsbury's.  The person before me had no issue in using it. However after taking my card and pin, selecting the withdrawal amount, the machine was wrirring for ages then said transaction unsuccessful and returned my card.    The person behind me didn't have an issue withdrawing a small amount cash. I logged onto my account and found it has debited the £500.   Called first direct who said they would ask for an audit of the machine but that it could take 28 days.
Does anyone know what may happen.  I can't afford to lose £500 for a failed transaction and don't understand if it failed why the money has debited.

The ATM audit should show that the cash wasn't dispensed and your transaction would then be reversed.

Often takes less, but as 3rd parties are involved it can take that long. It's just a case of waiting. You should see a refund in a few days, but that can be reversed if Speedbank say the cash was dispensed.

Remember a ATM is a mechanical device trying to pick up slippery bits of plastic, all controlled by a computer.... Just what could go wrong 🤦‍♀️
    Life in the slow lane
  • Check your account today - it might have been returned as a failed transaction.

    Sadly nothing yet

  • In that case you will need to let your bank investigate the withdrawal. All financial institutions have 19 working days in between balancing their machines - so it depends on where in that cycle the machine that you used is.
  • Just to update.  It returned to my account today,  so took a week but did sort itself.  I won't be using a machine for large withdrawals again tho.
