I commented in another forum how First Direct has made life very difficult now that they have forced Mastercard on us. Most online payments are fine except Tesco and Sainsburys. Problem I have is when I go to pay for a grocery order, they put you through to a Verified by Visa authorisation window. This says I can get a OTP via either email or phone but they don't offer me that choice. The only choice is First Direct App or my mobile. I do not live in a good signal area for the phone, though internet is fine, and I only have a windows phone which will no longer download apps. So what happens is, I request a OTP to my phone but it doesn't arrive in time for me to checkout!! First Direct have been unbelievably unhelpful about this and don't even seem to know why I can't request it via email. The only option is supposedly that I have to ring FD, which takes ages as they aren't what they used to be, and when they finally answer they have to pass me through to another department "to verify my identity" They also take ages to answer and then, if I am still holding on they manually put my payment through! This is ridiculous by anyone's standards. Oddly enough I can use a visa credit card without problems. (Tesco and Sainsburys don't offer Paypal either. Paypal unlike First Direct, offer solutions if you aren't able to get the text through in time. You can request a call back which works really well)
My question is, can I use OB just for those two online retailers but not allow it for anything else?0 -
I don‘t think your issue has anything to do with Open Banking, just with the way FD have chosen to implement Mastercards.
If it irritates beyond readonable levels, change bank. Or just get a second current account elsewhere, a free preloaded card (Tesco Clubcard Pay+, for instance), or try whether a Curve card would bypass the silly FD checks4 -
There is nothing in open banking which will help with the issue you describe. As per the response in your other thread, don't put up with bad service and move to a banking that works the way you need (or simply keep using your Visa CC, and make sure you pay it iff in a timely manner).0

Daliah, first thanks for the hint about a preloaded card - that may be useful. Second, I know my issue has nothing to do with OB. But the question I was asking is will OB solve the problem? I don't want to use OB if it is an "across the board" thing, but it could be useful if I can only allow those two retailers to access my bank account.0 -
It would not be your decision to use OB, anyway, as you can only use it if your bank / card provider has enabled it in the first instance. But even then, I can‘t see how OB would help with the issue you describe. It‘s not intended for 2FA, I don‘t think.1

The answer to this question is 'no', as Open Banking only allows you to share financial data with FCA-regulated third parties, basically other banks plus authorised providers of financial apps, but it's nothing to do with non-financial retailers.visi said:My question is, can I use OB just for those two online retailers but not allow it for anything else?
The MSE article linked from page one is a reasonable primer of what it is (and isn't) all about:

OK - ANYONE ELSE HAVING THIS PROBLEM: My bank now say they recognise that some people are having problems getting the OTP via text and they are putting people's names on a list to get a card reader in the new year!0

Best to start a separate thread about this as it's nothing to do with Open Bankingvisi said:OK - ANYONE ELSE HAVING THIS PROBLEM: My bank now say they recognise that some people are having problems getting the OTP via text and they are putting people's names on a list to get a card reader in the new year!3 -
Actually it is part of the thread because I wanted to know if OB could solve the problems I was havingBest to start a separate thread about this as it's nothing to do with Open Banking0 -
....but once it became clear that your issue is nothing to do with Open Banking, and can't be resolved by it, forum etiquette would dictate taking your non-OB chat elsewhere.visi said:
