Ah, that's what I thought, it was best for when you needed something heavier for screws. I might just go to Screwfix and get the the most heavy duty masonry bit, I've put up hundreds of shelves and pictures with a drill in my time but never have I come across anything this solid. Both me and my Dad had aching arms the day after we tried a few different places around the house, it really has got me frustrated.neilmcl said:
You don't want an impact driver that's for sure. These are great for driving screws but not what you want for drilling holes. Any decent combi drill set to hammer mode should be able to drill the holes you want.netty179a said:
Well it happened lol, extremely frustrating it is too. Both myself and my Dad, a seasoned DIY'er have tried and the walls are solid. I even rang the council to see if anyone could give an idea of what the walls are constructed off but no one could help. Even my neighbours are frustrated with the walls and just used professionals to do any work needed.grumbler said:
This is really hard to believe. Was it an impact drill driver?netty179a said:... I've gone through several masonry drill bits trying to make a hole for a plug and screw.
I'm almost sure it's not an impact drill driver as I've never needed a heavy duty drill before, I've never come across anything like it.
I would appreciate any advice however on the best drill to get as I'm happy to buy another as I have shelves and mirrors to put up too and have been putting off trying with my current drill as all I'm doing is leaving unsightly holes everywhere.
Thanks:beer: Netty179a0 -
The drill bits are the most critical try these: https://www.toolstation.com/bosch-multi-construction-tct-drill-bit-set/p512040

Oh, I think they're great, I've had lots of success with them, I only ever buy them when they are offer, 3 for 2 etc and you have to follow the instructions to the letter I've learnt though haha. However, I wouldn't risk a mirror with them, no matter how many I put on the back.brewthebear said:command strips are rubbish even the heavy duty ones will only hold light pictures would not use them again and expensive I wasted nearly £20 to hang a mirror and had to give up and I am a decent diy:beer: Netty179a0 -
I think there’s a bit of of confusion between an impact driver and a hammer drill in this thread. An impact driver is to really drive in your screw whereas a hammer drill hammers on your drill bit when you are creating the hole. I suppose that’s impact too of sorts, so I see where the confusion is coming from. Instead of wasting money on sophisticated drill bits for the wrong drill, get yourself a decent combi drill with hammer setting, or better still an SDS drill. I struggled along with a “combi” drill with hammer function for a year thinking that was good as it was going to get, until I relented and bought an SDS drill and SDS drillbits, and the difference is night and day, especially on concrete lintels which are probably quite similar to what you have. It’s a good tool to have in your armoury, and at least the corded ones aren’t actually that expensive.0
