freedom to decide

I have just taken Clydesdale bank to the ombudsman because I was trying to pay off my credit card quickly at £100 a month bal £1200 they refused my money and said I had to pay £100 into my account and then transfer it saying it was a money laundering protection scheme. They would accept £50 payment because it is a small amount. I overheard the cashier at East Kilbride tell an elderly lady all payments had to be done this way. Even though I went through Clydesdale bank own complaints procedure  they would not back down. The ombudsman agree this was wrong and have suggested £100 compensation. As this has happened at more than one branch i will wait for the letter and if challenged publically shame Clydesdale bank for trying to encourage customer to use cards not cash that decision is for me i won't be influenced by a bank. Shame on Clydesdale bank for misleading customer more shame for doing it to the elderly.

I doubt anyone sensible will see it as a matter for public shaming, or something to be ashamed of. Additionally there is nothing wrong with trying to incentivise people to use cards or online transactions over cash.
  • OP put the reference number for your case then we can see the full picture.
IMO there is nothing wrong with a bank refusing cash directly into a credit card rather than through an account.

It has honestly never occurred to me to try to pay a credit card any way aside from direct debit or a faster payment. Maybe it's a sign of my age, but I wouldn't even know where to start trying to pay cards like New Day with cash!

I can totally understand their point - for things like benefit fraud, people could work cash in hand, pay their credit card off with said cash and never have the money go through a bank account. I also don't see why paying it into an account first would be an issue - you'd still be handing over the same money and paying off the same card, the person at the bank would just be doing extra steps.
