Thanks two penny. I know you mentioned having the heating on all day. Our difficulty is we don't have a thermostat in the property. We just have the boiler on a timer
Like was posted, there's a simple solution to that and will make your life so much easier. Install a wireless room thermostat.

Also, as mentioned earlier have a look if your county council website has a page for the Green Homes Grant, you may be able to get insulation, draught proofing etc done for free if you qualify, or for a substantial grant toward the cost if you don't.

Or have a look at the Drayton Wiser system - A smarter thermostat that allows you to set different temperatures throughout the day/week. If the boiler also heats a hot water tank, a two channel system would be best along with a zone valve for the tank (if there isn't one already).
Any language construct that forces such insanity in this case should be abandoned without regrets. –

Treasure the moments that you have. Savour them for as long as you can for they will never come back again.

In days of yore (and 1930s is 90 years ago) people walked around their houses in pullovers, cardigans and jumpers, in winter. They wouldn't have had much insulation. I suggest pulling up a board in the loft, to inspect the insulation situation. If you're on a low income, you may be eligible for help with insulation costs. Some of these schemes end in March 2021 so I suggest talking to local council.

Carpet makes rooms warmer in winter, but they may make the room too hot in summer if you live on southern coast. We are experiencing an increasing number of 'tropical nights' now (you can Google). Painting or wallpapering in warmer tones will make you feel warmer, even if the temperature hasn't changed. Throws for armchairs and sofas, fleece blankets on top of duvet, brushed cotton bottom sheet. bed socks, hot water bottles, lined curtains, draught excluders on doors, big dog to snuggle with, draught excluder tape and brush strip on external doors, plus door curtains. New tighter-fitting front and back doors ?
