I owe HSBC money and they sent me a cheque out of the blue 7-10 years later for 50 pounds WTH?

No, to admit a debt, you need to write to the creditor concerned saying I admit this debt to you, or, making a payment to the debt constitutes admission too.
Banking a cheque admits nothing.

I got a cheque back from Halifax CC once after an aduit found they had collected too much or collected it in a wrong matter or something. I was getting all excited until I found out it was only for £1.08 and that included interest!

I deposited my cheque yesterday. I also went along to the local HSBC branch and git it confirmed as worried it was a scam. Found out I had an ISA open I didn’t remember.
