I had the same cheque - the reference number related to an account I closed over 8 years ago. The attached letter looks like they did an an audit of their collections team and have compensated me £50.
The month before Christmas I’ve just counted as a Christmas bonus and deposited via the app and it was cleared the same day1 -
Are they trying to figure out where my new account is?1

Perfectly normal, banks run checks every now and again to make sure they treated you in accordance with regulations, if any discrepancies are found, they usually compensate you for the breach, doesn't matter if you owe them money or not.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Debt free wannabe, Credit file and ratings, and Bankruptcy and living with it boards. Not sure if to cash the cheque because it might be a fishing exercise after so many years...
I wonder if cashing the cheque may equal admitting the debt itself? Will it open can of worms?0 -
I got a cheque from an electric company from 6+ years ago for £1 recently 😂1

I’ve had a cheque from them too for £25. It went to my mums house as that was the address I was at when I held the account at age 19, which was 13 years ago. She’s sending it to me. .0
