Cancelling a DD cancels a contract?

  • Hi all - long-time lurker; first-time poster.

@kuepper: if you look at renewing (or taking out) a contract, what do the T&Cs say? (Might be the easiest way to find the T&Cs).
Do they say that the contract is for a fixed period (e.g. 12 months) for a fixed monthly price? Or do they say that the contract is for a minimum period (e.g. 12 months) at a fixed monthly price?

In the former case the contract will lapse and you wouldn't owe them anything. In the latter case the contract will still be active but will be on a monthly rolling basis. This latter case is how all phone contracts work, as do all other utilities contracts (Gas/Electric).
  • Edit: (I can't actually edit my post above) Apologies if I've misinterpreted what you're asking.

I wouldn't bother with it anyway, save what it would cost you and use that to fix anything in the future.

You phoned knowing that cover was bout to be renewed only to complain that you hadn't received notice but didn't bother to cancel or find out what the new terms were going to be?

You know that they send those out for people who don't remember.

If you cancel the DD they will just come after you for the payment.
Did you read any of OPs post?

They said that they did call up to say they hadn't had the renewal notice and was told that several other people had reported the same, which indicates a possible problem on SPs end with issuing the notices.

They also said that they called more than once to find out what any new terms would be but nobody could answer. OP wasn't so much concerned about forgetting the renewal date but was concerned that the price or terms had changed for renewal and wanted clarification before deciding.
Yes I read all if it which is why I said what I did.
If SP couldn't tell them the changes in the contract there and then the OP could have cancelled and looked elsewhere, but they chose not to.
I did look elsewhere but if I left SP I'd lose continuity of cover and have a 14-30 day waiting period with other companies, I can't see any company that provides instant boiler cover as soon as you sign up.

They don’t as too often they find someone buys a policy on Monday and calls to claim on Tuesday because with the worst of luck it happened to breakdown overnight on the very day the policy was bought (obviously it was broken before hand which is why they bought the policy - over 90% of people say they think insurance fraud is fine).

Pay the loyalty tax but have continuous cover or take the risk for a fortnight/month and get a discount

"The contract of Maintenance & Support Services will last 12 months. Before your plan ends we will write to you about renewing"
No mention of fixed or minimum but I take that as fixed

I might if I was certain of being able to get someone out. I live in a rural area and I've been trying to get someone to replace my fascia/gutter for yonks, ppl promise to come round then never do or say they have too much work on etc. Same problem with green homes grant, been trying to get quotes for 2 months but given up now.
