New Thermostat and isolating unused wires

Hi all,

I have a new thermostat I am going to install however it doesn’t need all the wires that were are present.

I need to isolate the neutral and the earth wire as new thermostat does not need them.

what is the best way to isolate these wires, there is no junction box behind the thermostat currently.

cheers

  • The new thermostat will hopefully have a 'parking' terminal for the earth at least?

If not, then both could be safely terminated by fitting them in to a 5A terminal strip - cut off a double piece. Then snip the exposed wire end off each cable, insert and screw (matron!)

That should be enough. You could also isolate - disconnect - the neutral at the wiring centre end, but I wouldn't bovver.

If there isn't room behind the new 'stat for two wee terminals, then you can either dig out a space in the wall, or else terminate the cable ends by snipping off the bare wire, folding 10mm of the insulted end over itself, and taping it thoroughly.

Why doesn't your new 'stat need the neutral - is it battery operated? I wouldn't cut either wire short as you may well wish to return to a mains-powered device later.
  • Thanks @Jeepers_Creepers I am going from this thermostat HONEYWELL T6360-1028 as the dial has broken to this one  FLOMASTA 22199SX...

Good move changing to a Prog Stat - they make life so much easier.

The Flomasta is a no-frills model that does its job just fine. Really, the main difference between that fellow and one costing 5 times as much is how user-friendly they are; things like auto-Summer Time change (nope), being able to programme it without resorting to instructions (I doubt it), how easy to override to change temp at will - shouldn't be more than two obvious presses of buttons, etc.

Taking just this one from the SF page at random - https://www.screwfix.com/p/danfoss-tpone-m-087n785238-programmable-room-thermostat-mains-powered/3062v - this one looks far more user-friendly, and it's mains-powered so no wires to isolate + no batteries to change each year or so.

Then there's 'Hives' - wow, they are fab to use, but silly money unless you pick up a second-hand bargain.
