MSE Energy Cheap Club comparison check

A post to note that prices quotes by MSE for gas and electricity (standing and unit charges) are incorrect and overestimated for my current supplier (Avro Simple and Superfix) such that none of the cheaper tariffs quotes are actually cheaper than I am paying now (or in the forseeable future).

Comments

  • Incorrect how exactly. Quotes on MSE and other PCWs include VAT at 5%: unit prices and standing charges quoted by suppliers may not include this tax. Savings on switch are often misleading as they are based on an inflated cost for the next 12 months. For example, if you run a comparison with 1 month left on your present tariff, then the assumed cost with be 1 month on present tariff plus 11 months on the supplier’s standard variable tariff. It follows that a PCW can show a saving but your new tariff will cost you more. Blame Ofgem for this flawed methodology.

The figure you need to compare with your present supplier for the last year is the bottom line annual cost - as Dolor has said  ignore the "savings"   and double check re VAT.

Make sure in your comparisons that you are using ACTUAL consumptions in kWh - don't try to compare by number of rooms, DD, typical consumptions
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill
  • If you're comparing your current Avro tariff against what Avro have live now then they are likely to be different. Also Avro have had 5 tariffs similarly named 'Simple and SuperFix(ed), therefore if you're choosing your current tariff you may have chosen the wrong one.

If you already know how much you pay anyway then you can just look at the annual cost for each tariff after putting in your usage. If you are checking new tariffs then check if it's the same price as on the Avro website.

For some reason, I cannot see any Avro Energy tariffs other than the one I am on now above the search results.  May be someone tried to fix the 'Simple and SuperFix(ed)' flaws and over did it a bit. :)
