Been with LV for motor insurance for 3 or 4 years now.
Renewal just come through & cover up about £35.
Just to check I have done an online comparison & found lots of odd companies
with cheaper quotes but never heard of them so will not be going with them.
So I try Direct Line as I do every year & for some strange reason they come out
£101 cheaper for a better policy than LV.
Direct Line have normally come up with a silly expensive quote in previous years.
Wonder why all of a sudden they are giving me such a good price ??
Will they bump up the policy next year once they have me hooked ??

Many insurers have good value introductory offers to get new customers.  If they are the best value this year go with them.  Do a comparison again next year and move if necessary.  I did a similar exercise to you and also saw companies I'd never heard of.  LV would have been about £30 cheaper than Direct Line, but I didn't bother changing.

I have been with them for a few years now. Renewals have always been reasonable, only beaten by the never heard ofs, and the one time they were not they would not "price match" but instead requoted and came out cheaper !.

Pricing is commercially sensitive, you will basically never really know why they are now giving you better prices relative to LV.

The FCA are currently reviewing the practice of new customer discounts, online discounts etc and proposing that the former are abolished and the later become permanent (which will obviously result in lower discounting or companies dropping it). Inevitably you’ll find new business prices go up a bit and renewal prices come down a bit and meet somewhere in the middle.

At the moment that hasnt been implemented and so you’d expect that next years price will not include all the discounts you are getting today. That said, many insurers websites cannot or do not identify returning existing customers and so you can quote again and get new business prices again and then just lapse the old policy. Often this is due to dilution of marketing messages that would be required to otherwise stop existing customers getting new business quotes.
