Your photo shows an analogue Gas Meter, which are very reliable and if anything these meters tend to under read as they age
Check for a gas leak by shutting down all Gas appliances for several hours, and then check for meter advancement

Thanks. Will try turning it off tomorrow for a few hours and see if there is any change. The pipe runs about 1.5 meters from gas meter outside to boiler. I've never noticed a smell of gas - but guess maybe it doesn't take long for small a leak to add up.

Would be nice if it was just a faulty meter - and I hadn't run up a huge gas bill but seem unlikely.

Maybe I am just using 92000kwh per year? Is this possible? Does anyone large house us that?
  • My money is on the opening read being incorrect.
    Unless it’s a mansion on a thermostat of 30degrees!

    Something is wrong.
Your usage is more than five times what's considered "high consumption". It might be plausible for a 20 bedroom mansion, not for your house!
Meter fault, misreading, or calculation error seems very likely.
Do not accept being overcharged this way.

As an example, what do you think this electricity meter reads?
    I would say 69019

@GraemeMiller - Not sure what's going on here but there's a lesson to be learnt - don't leave it over a year to give meter readings. Had you read it last December and every month  you would have able to resolve the problem quickly. (I know you had a baby so perhaps other things on your mind)
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

it all looked wrong, until I found this:-

For imperial meters, the reading is in hundreds of cubic feet (100 ft³), so if your meter shows a usage of 1, you've actually used 100 ft³.
this would make the conversion to 94k correct.... but is that meter pictured really reading showing useage of 3000 x 100 cu.ft? I've never had to deal with an imperial gas meter before...
    ......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D

You just send in the four white digits.  The industry works in hundreds of cubic feet.
When sending a gas meter reading, you shouldn't convert any readings to plain cubic feet or to kWh, or send in any kWh figure displayed by a gas meter or IHD.
The energy company will do the conversion(s) automatically.

Don't disagree. Is what it is I guess. Lesson learned. If it turns out to be a meter fault it will be a pain to sort. If it is a leak I've burned a year of money. I guess either of those are better outcomes than this is how much my house costs to heat!

I know. I converted to a common base so more people could comment on usage as some measure in meter vs feet.

I submitted to Peoples Energy. They didn't show me the calculation just a change to my balance. So I needed to do calculations myself to see how I went from paying £273 a month to then owing them £3700 after entering new readings.
