Yet, the supply of the cat is a £400 part according to that link.
The cheap ones only last about 12 months before they split, and that £400 doesn't include the new exhaust sensor, the repair to the wiring loom, and the work needed to weld two stub pipes on with flanges to fit, or new exhaust pipes each side of the catalyst.
£360, two year warranty. £17 for a fitting kit.

Yes, there might be a repair needed to the loom if the idiots snipped the wiring to the lambdas. Not a big job - and I'd imagine Toyota have a repair loom available.

The police shouting silliness about a six grand bill only fuels the trade, because the hard-of-thinking believe it.

A few months ago I sold a car to a (legit, properly registered) scrap dealer.  They came to collect it as it was completely immobile, and gave me a reasonable price for it.  When the guy came in his transporter, the first thing he did was check that the cat was still there and said "Good, that's the gravy" (his exact words).  Implying that the cat was probably the most valuable part of the car to them, given the rest of it was completely knackered?
Yes, it just took the car from £50 of mixed-metals by weight to £100 value to him.

Thanks.  I understand that the £400 is not the full repair costs.  However, local Police advise that a stolen cat means a £6-8k repair so likely a write-off.  How can that be?

Also, it followed Adrian's post about scrap value only £100.  That seems reasonable for what is a far cheaper part than £6k.  Does not make sense that the police say the gangs are organised crime, armed and willing to maim or kill for a cat.  Seems like the Police are nurturing fear.

Not to mention the damage that can be caused  by an angle grinder slipping.

It is a £6k repair though insurance.
You have multiple middle men, each taking a fat profit, then there is the car hire whilst the cat is sourced and repaired- for some reason insurers always pay £200 a day to hire a car, when you could hire an identical one for less than £200 a week....

Same reason a £3k car is written off because of a broken bumper and headlights.
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))

Hi all, like most areas these days, catalytic converter theft has gone through the roof. I think the car makes a real row if the cat is cut out, but how do I know if either me or my husband's car has one in the first place?
Perhaps the Op would like to rethink the question and actually put some details of their cars.
Otherwise only people with crystal balls can reply.
Yes we all know that cars from a certain age should have them...

I replied to Adrian C a few days ago that our cars are 2017, and I didn't know that cars from a certain age should have them hence my question :)
