Can't Log in to HMRC

My driving licence is up for renewal. It expired at the begining of this month. The government has extended the time before they will send out renewal forms but the licence remains valid. A bit like the extention for M.O.T's earlier in the year. Unfortunately, this is the document that is used to prove my i.d by Experia. So when I attempt to log into my self employed tax account, it wont let me in because it tells me my licence has expired. I have tried using the government gateway but no combination of passwords, e mails, or tax reference numbers will allow me in. I simply can not get into my online account. I cannot pay my income tax and I won't be able to apply for the third grant. I have been trying for eight hours and the web site just keeps sending me in circles with endless access codes and endless security questions which I answer only to be sent another access code which takes me back to the same security questions. Each time giving me a new gateway i.d and asking for a new password.
With no passport, my only option is to apply at the post office for a new driving licence and wait up to three weeks for it to arrive. But what would somebody do if they didn't have a driving licence? I have been sending tax returns for over 20 years and I have never had a problem like this before. How the heck do I get into my self assessment tax account. It might have been an idea for the government to tell the credit agencies or anybody else who requires valid i.d that they are extending the period before the driving licence expires. Anybody else had this problem? Check your licence, you just might.

Presumably, you mean Experian and this is the GOV.Verify system?0

You could try Webchat or helpdesk when they are open https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/hm-revenue-customs/contact/online-services-helpdeskInformation I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.0

I do not understand why you need a driving license to access the HMRC website, the process that I use (for personal and LTD) and that everyone i know uses is the Gateway ID, a password and the one time code HMRC send via SMS when you log in.
To pay your tax you could do so via bank transfer which would not require access to the HMRC portal and you have enough time to apply for the new SEISS grant after a license renewal, although I would attempt to figure out why you can not access the HMRC site via normal means in the interim. It may also at some point be worth applying for a passport as in the long run it will make things easier.1 -

If I could use the same password and gateway I.d I have used for years I would have. They don't recognise them since I used verify. Which when it worked was very easy. I can get into gov.UK but it keeps telling me I'm on the wrong account. Click here for self assessment. Which I do. Only to go through the whole process again. I drive vulnerable adults and as such. I have dB's checks coming out of my ears. The local council have no problem with my licence being expired. They recognised the dvla extension. Yet the agency employed by the government don't. I'll try again today but after 8 hours it fries what's left of my brain.0

Ok. Another morning wasted just trying to log onto my account. Experian wont recognise my drivers licence. The post office won't recognise two mobile phone contracts and keep asking if I have a non uk passport or drivers licence. I have recovered my user I.D AND password for my Gateway account... BUT.... in order to verify it all HMRC send me a text message with a code to complete the process. Just type in the code and I'm back in business. The code is being sent to the mobile number I had about 10 years ago. I cannot access the access code! So, HMRC need to ask a few questions just to see who I am. I have already gone through the virtual assistant questions and they know who I am. After once again giving my name, e mail, utr and n.i number it comes back with..... we have no details about you. Yet five minutes before they have given me my user I.D and accepted the password? There is no facility online to simply change my mobile number so I can recieve the last (I hope) little bit of the jigsaw that gets me back onto my self assessment acount. Tomorrow will be taken up trying to obtain a new drivers licence and waiting on the phone I suppose. But who need to work eh?
