  • Hi everyone

well I just want to add more to the already talked about self employed grant .
I’m a self employed painter and decorator and my work had just started to pick up properly in September when I had my best month of the year but
since then the work has dropped again significantly especially the last 3 weeks .
I dont get written confirmation that jobs have been cancelled from the company I’m working for , only a telephone call saying jobs have been cancelled .
The reasons being that the property  owners have been told to self isolate .
And on another occasion had to vacate the property immediately after owners had to fetch their children from school after corona virus track and trace .
I also don’t  have a diary of work in front of me and get given jobs on a daily or weekly basis depending on the size of the job in hand usually by a telephone call ,so I am usually unable to do alternative work and end up having time off .
my main concern is although I am significantly down on income for  November am I still eligible to claim now even though potentially work could pick up a little in December and January ?

hope this thread isn’t getting annoying

If your work could realistically pick up in December and January, to the extent that either you had no overall reduction in activity etc in the period 1 November 2020 to 29 January 2021, or that any such reduction might not be significant in the context of your current year's profit, you would be better waiting longer to see how things pan out. The time limit to claim is 29 January 2021.

    Thanks Jeremy

I live by myself with my daughter so every day counts for me .
the big drop in income this month is going to have a knock on effect for me over the next few months .
I have dropped by half Septembers earnings this month , and dropped by 30% from October’s earnings .

  • If I see HMRC come back and chase a Regular Joe for a few thousand pounds because they think they claimed when it was a bit iffy, I would be amazed.

Maybe so, but that's not advice I would give.

Maybe so, but I also wouldn't recommend taking advice from Jeremy off the Internet.

A good point, and "advice" was the wrong word. All we can do on here is give our thoughts on a question. I don't see the point of a response that says "you're unlikely to be caught even if you do" though, because it doesn't attempt to answer the question raised.

Establishing the reduction and "because of coronavirus" and the "reasonable belief" seem straight-forward enough terms, the vague one is the whether the impact on profits is "significant".  The OP and johe may be interested in this thread:

significant - This is down to perception.  in my opinion if you can show definitive loss of profits(due to the stipulated rules) and its not a negligible amount .  5% to 10% seems a good figure to me.
HMRC have already acknowledged 80% grant may be allot more than any loss.
