Hi
Havent used Pay Pal for at least 15 years.
Received a letter informing me I had to reactivate my account by signing in and buying something using Pay Pal.
I have until 16th December to do this.
If I DON'T they will charge me £9 for NOT reactivation!
Is this fair? A scam
I dont want it and I refuse to be blackmailed into using something I havent used in years.
Help please!

Some months ago it was announced that they were changing their terms and conditions and introducing an annual charge for dormant accounts. I would assume that those with dormant PayPal accounts were given notice by PayPal's normal method and had several months to close the account if it was no longer required?

I imagine you had several emails which you have ignored and that is why they have now written by letter?

As per UV's post and the charge is only payable from money sitting in your account anyway, so if there is nothing there is no charge.

But hopefully you have not left money sitting in it for 15 years!

  • I have changed my bank account so they have no chance!

Just close the account, changing your bank account will not stop them chasing you for something that is due

As I said it's not due. They only take it from money left in the account. Which seems perfectly reasonable.

I received the same via email.  It's not a scam.  They have changed their terms and conditions to say that if you have an account that is there but inactive for over a year it will be subject to a charge.  The charge won't apply in most cases for people who use Paypal.  This was covered in the MSE Newsletter of 14 October 2020, along with guidance on how to avoid it. https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/news/2020/10/paypal-to-introduce-p12-yr-fee-for--inactive--accounts---act-now/

What campaign does this relate to..?

They don’t charge your bank account.

If you want to use PayPal again though the charge would more than likely get deducted from any future balance.

    Just close the account, simple.

It's only applicable for those accounts which have not been used for ages AND which have money left in them
If the account is at zero then there is no charge - there must be millions of dormant accounts of balance zero previously used by now deceased persons and never closed - and paypal woudl have a lot of difficulty in charging them and getting any money back.
So the OP MUST have left money in the account for 15 years+
  • It gets better too. I went to log on to PayPal to delete what is an unused dormant account - found the account has an old phone number linked to it so because of 2 step authorisation, I can't enter the passcode they provide so now I can't log on to delete the account. You can't ring them and speak to someone, you can't contact them unless you log on - it's horrendous. I see there are loads of people in the same boat and their advice: log in and change your details....ahh, but I can't log in so I can't. What do I do?
