Retention of card details

Hi, last year I took out house insurance with Policy Expert, I ensured auto renewal wasn't ticked. This year, (by phone) after some negotiation on price I agreed to renew. At payment I was asked if previous card detail could be used, I agreed. Later I  realised that a no time even the 3 digit security reference was not asked for. Is this normal can these company's retain full card details for later use?

They haven't retained it for future use - you gave them permission to use the details they have retained for a (different) legitimate purpose when you agreed to renew your insurance for the purposes of renewing your insurance.
Whenever you use a credit or debit card, your details will always be retained in case of any query, and for auditing purposes.
I consider myself to be a male feminist. Is that allowed?
  • They aren't allowed to store the 3 digit CVV number due to PCI-DSS rules, but payments can be taken without it. (Amazon are best known for not using it.) It just increases their liability with the bank if there's fraud involved, etc.
The rest of the details are allowed to be stored for the reasons surreysaver says above.
