Dealers seem to expect you to have a car to trade in. You should get a really good discount as a cash buyer with no trade in.
I don't think that is the case anymore, no discount for cash, its all about the finance deal.

But then clear the finance in full as soon as the incentive has been banked.

Haggle on the price first before you mention how you are paying. If you walk into a dealership and say you are a cash buyer from the off then obviously you're not going to get the best deal, don't show them your upper hand.

I remember buying a car and I thought maybe I could haggle £200-300 off the screen price. He asked me what I was trading in and I said nothing. He then knocked £800 off the price so I bought it. I think the implication was that they normally offered more for the trade in than the car was worth. Of course you then wonder if you should have knocked even more off but it did seem a good deal. It was a while ago maybe things have changed.
